Default Resolution Group (DRG)

Borrowers of federal student loans who fail to make their regularly scheduled monthly payments will enter into default. If they are unable to work with their existing servicer to get out of default, their loan will be transferred to the Default Resolution Group (DRG), an office of the U.S. Department of Education that services defaulted student loans.

Who is the Default Resolution Group?

The Default Resolution Group is an office located within the U.S. Department of Education that specifically acts as the servicer student loans for borrowers who have defaulted or whose guarantee agency closes.

The Default Resolution Group and MAXIMUS Federal Services

The Department of Education Default Resolution Group services defaulted student loans through a contract with Maximus Federal Services.

Under this contract, Maximus manages the servicing platform for all defaulted federal student loans, the Default Management Collections System (DMCS). Maximus also manages the call center responsible for helping defaulted borrowers get out of default.
